Assistant Legal Officer – Policy and Legal Review at SCIDaR
Solina Centre for International Development and Research (SCIDaR) is an indigenous nonprofit organisation focused on advancing health, social, and economic development through programme design and implementation, capacity building, research, knowledge generation, and stakeholder engagement.
SCIDaR is seeking an Assistant Legal Officer to support its legal team in policy and legal review. The role is suitable for a law graduate with a strong interest in legal research, policy development, human rights, health law, governance, and data protection.
The successful candidate will conduct legal research, review policies and legal frameworks, support advocacy initiatives, assist with corporate governance matters, and contribute to compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
Key Responsibilities
Legal Research
- Conduct detailed research on national and international laws, policies, and best practices, particularly in health, international development, and human rights.
- Review legal frameworks and policies for compliance with human rights standards.
- Identify gaps in existing policies and recommend potential areas for reform.
Policy Review and Analysis
- Analyse laws, regulations, and policies and assess their impact on development and human rights.
- Prepare reports, legal briefs, and opinions on policy implications and legal reforms.
- Support the development of policy proposals aligned with human rights principles.
Human Rights Advocacy
- Assist in preparing advocacy materials supporting human rights legislation and policy reform.
- Monitor and document human rights violations.
- Provide legal analysis to support advocacy activities.
Corporate Governance
- Support compliance with statutory obligations, governance policies, and internal controls.
- Assist with board meeting preparations, board documentation, minutes, and general board support.
Legal Documentation
- Assist in drafting legal documents, contracts, and policy papers.
- Review legal submissions to ensure they meet required standards.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Liaise with human rights organisations, government agencies, international bodies, and other stakeholders.
- Attend relevant meetings, workshops, and forums on behalf of the legal team where required.
- Gather information and contribute to legal and policy reform initiatives.
Data Protection and Privacy Compliance
- Support implementation of the Nigeria Data Protection Act and other applicable privacy laws.
- Assist with reviewing data processing activities for compliance.
- Support the preparation and maintenance of Records of Processing Activities (ROPAs), privacy notices, consent documentation, and other compliance records.
- Assist with Privacy Threshold Assessments (PTAs), Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs), and Legitimate Interest Assessments (LIAs).
- Monitor developments in data protection legislation and regulatory guidance relevant to SCIDaR.
General Legal Support
- Provide administrative and legal support to the legal team.
- Assist with materials for legal training sessions and presentations.
- Stay informed about emerging human rights trends and legislative developments.
- Support legal risk identification, prevention, and mitigation.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Law (LLB) and BL.
- Demonstrated experience preparing reports and documenting research findings in research papers or publications.
- Strong interest in policy review, policy development, legal research, and human rights advocacy.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to explain complex legal issues clearly and concisely.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to high ethical standards.
- Demonstrated interest in and commitment to SCIDaR’s mission.
- Ability to learn quickly and collaborate effectively with colleagues and supervisors.

Information Security Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be expected to support SCIDaR’s information security practices by complying with established security policies, completing mandatory training, protecting organisational data and systems, reporting security incidents or suspicious activities, and following secure information-handling practices.
