Job Description
The Senior Account Officer will oversee critical accounting functions, ensure compliance with financial regulations, prepare statutory reports, manage tax obligations, and maintain accurate financial records. The role requires strong technical accounting expertise, attention to detail, and experience within a regulated banking environment.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will:
- Ensure accurate daily posting of financial transactions into the accounting system.
- Prepare monthly Expected Credit Loss (ECL) provisions for loans, advances, placements, and staff loan impairment.
- Manage the Fixed Assets Register, including additions, disposals, and monthly schedules.
- Maintain Right-of-Use (ROU) assets and lease liability schedules.
- Reconcile monthly loan and deposit schedules with the General Ledger.
- Prepare General Ledger proofs and schedules for receivables and payables.
- Process monthly staff payroll journal entries and related accounting postings.
- Ensure compliance with the bank’s accounting policies, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Microfinance regulations.
- Prepare and submit monthly regulatory reports to the Central Bank of Nigeria.
- Process statutory remittances, including:
- PAYE
- Pension
- NHF
- Withholding Tax (WHT)
- EMTL
- NSITF
- Prepare and maintain statutory deduction schedules.
- File annual tax returns with relevant State Internal Revenue Services.
- File annual tax returns with the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).
- Coordinate annual tax audits with tax consultants and regulatory authorities.
- Process annual Tax Clearance Certificates for the bank and its employees.
Educational Qualifications
Applicants should possess:
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
- Professional accounting certification such as:
- ACA
- ACCA
Experience
Candidates should have:
- Minimum of five years’ post-qualification experience in finance and accounting within a National Microfinance Bank or Commercial Bank.
